After a lifeless cease, which feels just like the finale, we get a reasonably lengthy coda, and that is more daring harmonically. But if this piece has the delicacy of a Gil Evans rating, Bigband forty four is a jazz samba extra harking back to the jazz of 20 years later (’64). After an excellent Art & Music piano solo introduction by Fred Lang, delicate brass mixtures move in to introduce the theme, adopted by a mellow tenor sax statement in opposition to guitar counterpoint. This one is basically fascinating ensemble figures interspersed with nice sax solos.
